Review: Clockwork Prince

Title: Clockwork Prince

Series: Infernal Devices #2

Author: Cassandra Clare

Read via: Christmas Gift

In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, though her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will; the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

I absolutely adored The Mortal Instruments series, but I did not completely fall in love with Clockwork Angel. However, I was still really looking forward to reading this, especially as the reviews for this were so positive. Needless to say I am definitely one of those positive reviewers. With this book I am a solid, happy fan of the Infernal Devices series.

All of the characters are so unique, interesting, and all around entertaining. Tessa is a marvelous heroine, although not as physically tough as some. Her abilities and history remain completely intriguing. Jem and Will are even better in this book than the first. The relationship between the three of them is exceedingly complex. This is probably, hands-down the best love triangle I have ever read. I cannot remember another book where I was so torn as to how I wanted it to end. Even as one couple is perfectly happy, the person being left out completely breaks my heart. Sophie’s role expands in this book, and I found that to be very enjoyable. I loved her all-around, and I hope we get to see more of her in the next book.

I sped through this book, because it was absolutely impossible to put down. From the opening of the book through the shocking last sentences, the book charges full speed ahead. Full of mystery, intrigue, romance, and heartbreak, there is never a dull moment. All of the characters experience growth, but it was especially noticeable in Will’s storyline. So much is revealed about his history and his motivations, and honestly it just makes him that much better as a character.

Filled with Cassandra Clare’s trademark witty remarksĀ and beautiful writing, this book is absolutely brilliant and has a well-earned spot on my favorites shelf. Fans of both the Mortal Instruments series and Clockwork Angel are sure to love this, and, like me, will be anxiously awaiting the next book. The cliffhanger ending will ensure that. I highly, highly recommend both this series and Mortal Instruments!
